Advancing sustainable e-methanol production

Methanol Reformer is participating in THUNDER, a European research and innovation project. The project is coordinated by Eurecat – Centro Tecnológico and funded under the Horizon Europe programme.

THUNDER aims to develop new technologies for producing e-methanol (e-MeOH) from CO₂ and renewable hydrogen. In doing so, it supports industrial decarbonisation and the transition towards cleaner fuels.

Moreover, the project brings together European research organisations and industrial partners. Together, they aim to develop new ways to use CO₂ and support a more sustainable economy.

An innovative approach to e-methanol production

THUNDER is developing an integrated “one-pot” technology for e-methanol production. This system combines three processes: CO₂ and H₂O capture, co-electrolysis, and hydrogenation.

By bringing these processes together, the project aims to simplify e-methanol production. It also seeks to enable carbon-neutral fuel production through CO₂ utilisation and renewable energy.

Furthermore, captured CO₂ can serve as a valuable resource. This approach could help reduce industrial emissions and support the development of sustainable synthetic fuels.

E-methanol could also play an important role in the energy transition. For example, it has potential applications in the chemical industry, transport, and maritime sectors. These industries face significant challenges in reducing their emissions.

Methanol Reformer’s contribution to THUNDER

Within the consortium, Methanol Reformer contributes its expertise in methanol reforming and hydrogen generation. The company focuses on hydrogen-based energy solutions and related value chains.

Its contribution supports the development of technologies for both the production and use of e-methanol. As a result, the project can draw on expertise in methanol technologies and hydrogen-based energy applications.

In addition, Methanol Reformer continues to support collaborative research into clean energy technologies. These efforts contribute to the transition towards lower-carbon industrial and energy systems.

Methanol Reformer at the consortium meeting in Turin

Juana García Martínez, Quality Manager at Methanol Reformer, represented the company at the THUNDER consortium meeting in Turin. She joined the other project partners to continue the planned activities.

These meetings allow partners to share technical knowledge and strengthen collaboration. They also help coordinate work towards the project’s research and innovation objectives.

Through this cooperation, research institutions, technology developers, and industrial partners can work towards common goals. Together, they aim to advance integrated e-methanol production technologies and assess their potential for industrial use.

Seven European partners working together

THUNDER brings together seven European organisations. Each partner contributes expertise in research, industrial innovation, or technology development.

The consortium includes:

  • Eurecat – Centro Tecnológico (Spain): Project coordinator.

  • Politecnico di Torino (Italy).

  • CNRS (France).

  • ICODOS GmbH (Germany).

  • nova-Institut GmbH (Germany).

  • JORCAR 2009, S.L. (Spain).

  • Methanol Reformer S.L. (Spain).

The project has a total budget of €3,992,190 and receives funding under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme.

By combining their expertise, the seven partners aim to accelerate industrial decarbonisation. They also seek to promote the use of CO₂ as a resource.

Supporting the future of sustainable fuels

Participation in THUNDER gives Methanol Reformer the opportunity to collaborate with leading European organisations. It also allows the company to contribute its knowledge of methanol reforming and hydrogen generation.

Through this collaboration, Methanol Reformer supports the development of next-generation e-methanol technologies.

Meanwhile, Europe continues to advance its climate and energy objectives. Collaborative research projects such as THUNDER help connect scientific innovation with industrial applications.

Methanol Reformer is proud to contribute to this European initiative. The company will continue supporting innovative solutions for a more sustainable energy future.
